Get ready for what may be the scariest zombie movie yet: The Killing Strain. Directed by Daniel Maldonado and shot entirely in San Antonio, it opens on the big screen Friday, June 18th and Saturday, June 19th at midnight at The Palladium, Mayan and Silverado. These showings will probably sell out so go to this link to buy tickets in advance.

This film looks great, with high quality cinematography…check out the trailer:

About the Film:

Viruses, which need a host because they cannot reproduce on their own, are the original zombie organisms. It takes just one rogue human-engineered virus strain to change our species into something unrecognizable as human.

Imagine, if you will, you and your new wife on a cross-country trip, when a tire blowout stops you in the middle of nowhere. Imagine further your wife doesn’t come back from a short walk through a nearby cornfield. What do you imagine could have taken her away? What is out there, and what can it be that pursues you so mindlessly?

Watch as David, the young husband, does everything he can to stay alive and stay away from the once-human creatures that hunger for David’s beating heart. He takes refuge with an isolated group of uninfected people, and there he gradually finds the inner strength to lead a young woman away from the madness that is The Killing Strain.

If you are interested in the filmmakers and how they created the film, check out the San Antonio Current‘s latest issue for Jeremy Martin’s article Diary of the Dead.

The plot:

In a quiet American town, life has decidedly slowed down to a crawl. A small group of scientists have unwittingly unleashed a horrible force upon the town. Mary Jane, the all American sweetheart, parks on Make Out Hill with her boyfriend Billy Everybody. He smokes some of the reefer and is suddenly transformed into a sex- crazed reefer zombie. Just as Billy lunges forward he is pulled out of the car and thrown to ground and shot. Mary Jane looks at her brutal savior, Dr. S. Dr S. battles his way back to the city, while dragging Mary Jane behind him. While Mary Jane tries to come to grip with the possible reality of her family dead and asks Dr. S to explain how this all happened. Dr. S tells her of how he and his team developed the reefer for the military to use as weapon, but it was too unstable. In a last ditch effort to create a more stable strain of the reefer, Dr. S tested some on himself. The reefer changed him, made him strong, but filled with an uncontrollable rage. Unable to stop himself Dr. S killed his whole team. Convincing Mary Jane there is a cure, Dr. S vows to set things right.

We’ve mentioned this before, but there has been a schedule change you may be interested in. Instead of the previously touted Giorgio Moroderized version of Metropolis, you can itness the spectacle of KUNG FU ZOMBIE!

Here’s a mini-review from the Overtime’s inhouse martial arts enthusiast, Scott McDowell:

Kung Fu Zombie is a charming flick loaded with fast-paced martial arts fighting. The story is too over the top to explain here, but it’s worth mentioning that this film has zombies, ghosts, a vampire, a wizard, possessions, an exorcism, paintings that shoot lasers out of their eyes, and a healthy dose of well-executed kung fu! All of this is packed into a film on the short side of 80 minutes. Intentionally funny, Kung Fu Zombie is a hilarious, tightly edited romp of a film. The big pay-off is at the end of the film when Billy Chong fights an undead vampire martial arts master. The energy and absurdity of this scene is magnificent. If you’re expecting a lot of zombies, you may be disappointed, but if you’re looking for an entertaining ride on the wonderful roller-coaster of crazy kung fu films, Kung Fu Zombie won’t disappoint!

Hard to resist with a description like that. It will give you a reason to stick around after seeing The Brain That Wouldn’t Die: A New Musical.

The San Antonio Horrific Film Fest is so chock full of films it may be hard to decide which ones to see. There are four that stand out to us at Mission Unknown as must-see movies. The following films have deep San Antonio roots and deserve your consideration:

Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies

In a quiet American town a small group of scientists have unwittingly unleashed a horrible force. Mary jane, the all American sweetheart, parks on Make Out Hill with her boyfriend Billy. He smokes some of the reefer and is suddenly transformed into a sex crazed reefer zombie. Just as Billy lunges forward he is pulled out of the car, thrown down and shot. Mary Jane looks at her brutal savior, Dr. S.

Dr. S battles his way back to the city convincing Mary Jane there is a cure. What follows is a blood soaked, fright filled extravaganza of pain, gore and butchery that will bring an uncertain end for Crystal Oaks and the world as we know it.

Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies was produced by Film Classics Productions and directed by Bryan Ortiz. This movie has been getting a lot of positive reviews. Film Classics Productions short film Four Minutes Till The End was selected to screen at The Short Film Corner as part of The 62nd Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France earlier this year. Way to represent!

Zombie Movie

When Dave is dumped by his girlfriend of 4 1/2 yrs, he falls into a depressive rut from which his best friends from Beta Iota Epsilon become determined to take him out of. After dragging Dave to a Fraternity Mixer in which he bumps into his ex-girlfriend Jaime and her new boyfriend, rival Fraternity president Brett Brauner, the situation worsens for Dave as his best friend Bull accidentally wakes the corpses of a Cannibalistic Devil worshipping Cult which was buried alive on the grounds 100 years earlier.

Now Dave and the Beta boys must fight through hordes of newly infected zombies to find Jaime and put an end to the seemingly indestructible Cult Zombies in order to save the world from the Zombpocalypse and rekindle Jaime’s love for him.

Zombie Movie was produced by The Darkness who also are responsible for the special effects (naturally) and it was written and directed by Sergio Guerra.

As the walls of his perfect facade begin to crumble, he must face a killer hellbent on destroying his very existence.

Echo was produced by Live Wire Films and was written and directed by Mark Cantu.

The House of the Demon

Ortiz Entertainment in association with Twisted Stickman Productions presents The House Of The Demon, an independent feature-length horror/comdey shot entirely on location in South Texas and directed by George Ortiz.

It’s Halloween–the biggest party night of the year–and a group of college friends won’t let the university’s new ban on parties spoil their plans. Fortunately, Charlie has just inherited his recently deceased uncle’s abandoned house on the outskirts of town. What is supposed to be a night of good clean Halloween fun becomes an outrageous nightmare of demonic possession as each of the hapless teens discovers what’s inside The House of the Demon!

Lone Bannana has Zombie Attack DVDs and shirts available on their site.
