The San Antonio Film Commission sponsored their annual San Antonio 48 Hour Film Experience which saw more than 20 teams working to produce a shirt film over the course of a weekend. The 2011 sa48hr competition was the weekend of December 2nd and this year the theme was Drought: Life Without Water. All films needed to incorporate a literal or figurative interpretation of the theme. Teams were given other variable Friday night like Genre and Location and then the race was on to distill all ideas into an eight-minute piece.

The screening of the films was Tuesday Dec. 6th at the historic Guadalupe Theater, but don’t fret if you did not attend. We will be showcasing as many of these shorts as possble over the weekend. Not all of these films fit neatly into our favorite genres, but we love seeing San Antonio’s brilliant film community cast into this 48-hour crucible.

First up is the film Drought of Essentials from Missing Peace Productions. The team pulled the Telenovela genre and clearly had a lot of fun hamming it up. Directed by Veronica R. Hernandez, Drought of Essentials explores the new ways technology allows people to be unfaithful. Enjoy.

Hidden Track Films snagged the top honors in the 2011 San Antonio 48-Hour Film Project with the short Sci-Fi thriller The Extraction. This tense little film not only won the Best Film Award but also swept up awards for Best Costume, Best Sound Design, Best Directing, Best Editing and an Audience Award. The Extraction was directed and produced by Kimberly Scott and Chris Pichado and was shot using 2 Canon 5D mkII cameras. Congratulations to all involved. Check out the film as it was submitted for the contest.

The Extraction (Original Cut) from Hidden Track Films on Vimeo.

The Extraction now moves on to the national level of the The 48-Hour Film Project where it will be representing San Antonio at Filmapalooza in the Taos Shortz Film Fest (March 2-4, 2012). Winners representing 102 cities from around the world are competing for for the title of 48HFP International Best film, the international trophy, $3,000 and a screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Naturally we will bring you more films as they are shared online. Check after the jump for The Ultimatum and Black Box.

The Ultimatum, a dark comedy from Achromat Productions, won the award for Best Use of Prop, a wrapped present.

Black Box did not claim any awards, but was fun nonetheless.

The San Antonio leg of the 48-Hour film project was sponsored by the San Antonio Film Commission. Film crews have a mere 48 hours of the course of a weekend to create a short film in a randomly selected genre using the following elements: a character named Ross or Rose Gillen who is an Upholsterer/Furniture Maker, a wrapped present as a prop and the line of dialogue “I wouldn’t count on it.”

First, the awards, which were handed out last night at the Film Commission’s annual holiday party.

First place and the Audience Award went to Team Uncle Dynamite with their film La Vida De Noche, Second went to Team Live Wire for Endgame and third place was claimed by Team Cine Veliz. Team Uncle Dynamite was lead by Pete Barnstrom and featured the copious talents of Wes Barlow, Nikki Young, Brant Bumpers, Justin Barlow, Becky Jacobs, Karina Barlow, José Salinas, Lee Hurtado, Joey Carrillo, Paul Vaughn, David Stinemetze, Jeanie Portis, Miranda Contreras, Dan Smith and David Garza. Congratulations to all!

Second, we’re still trying to bring you as many of the entries as possible. This one, entitled Wild Sunday, presents a tale of the violent clash of generations. Directed by Rod Guajardo and featuring Anthony Guajardo (recently seen in AMC’s The Walking Dead). Rod has a nice blog post outlining the project and showing production stills.

This video is the entry from the San Antonio Film Commission. Since the commission was the judge and sponsor of the event, their entry did not compete. Commissioner Drew Mayer-Oakes puts it int he category of “Walk the Walk”.

The Melody (La Melodia) is a creepy little tale of the supernatural. It stars Pedro Castañeda and Laura Evans, and was written and directed by Drew Mayer-Oaks. Enjoy.

San Antonio filmmakers took part in the 2009 SA48HR Film Experience over the weekend and you can see the results tonight at the Santikos Bijou theater. The showing is at 7:00, December 8th.

Madame Arielle: Voodoo Artiste - For all your Voodoo needs.

The SA48HR started on Friday with a Kick-Off event at the El Tropicano Hotel where all teams drew for the film variables, and then embarked on their weekend film experience. To help make sure all the teams have a fair shot, variables are handed out including a genre, a character, a location and a line of dialog. Movies must be 8 minutes or less and had to be turned in by 7:30 on Sunday.

As always, Missions Unknown will highlight any of the films with a SF/F/H angle. This time, I have a new insight into the 48 hour filmmaking having helped out on one of the teams. Our team, led by Mistah Pete Barnstrom, produced a short called Voodoo Daddy, a little tale of a child’s revenge on his overbearing father.

Our team consisted of Mistah Pete (writer/director/actor), Paul Vaughn (fake web site and title graphics), Erik Bosse (cinematography), Carlos Piña (actor), Tamedra Jones Vasquez (actor), Cooper Barnstrom (actor) and Rocky Piña (stuntperson). We drew the Film Noir genre and had to include the character of Arielle, an artiste, and mention the location Hill Country and include the line of dialog “Hey, I shave my legs with that!”

Come out to the Bijou tonight and show your support for local filmmakers. Mistah Pete and I will both be there, we hope to see you.
