San Antonio has long been known as a weirdness magnet. Whether it’s infamous hotel ghosts, Spurs catching bats, phantom children pushing cars, or Bigfoot himself, SA was a weird streak a mile long. And that streak extends to the skies above the city as evidenced in the following video provided by YouTube user SAUFOTX.

The San Antonio Current has been trolling for UFO stories since May and their blogger Chasing Shadows pointed us toward this one. Read their full article, San Antonio resident’s UFO video of triangular craft receives support from investigator.

Here’s what SAUFOTX had to say about the video:

On September 14, 2011 a huge UFO craft was filmed over San Antonio, TX. As I was facing west I notice this huge glowing object traveling east. I could clearly see this object was no aircraft. No FAA navigational light’s were visible. So I quickly grabbed my camcorder for a closer observation. As i began filming this huge unknown object multiple lights could be seen. This UFO appears to be a solid craft. On the video you can see this object [appears] to be emiting some kind of glowing energy. While I was filming unknown, the lights’ configuration began to change. When zooming in multiple lights were different shape. I did not see any FAA lights [or] hear any noise coming from this unknown object. In my opinion clearly [this was] an UNIDENTIFED FLYING OBJECT. This was an awesome sighting…as it appears to be one solid object. And the size of this object seemed to be enormous. This huge glowing object was clearly no aircraft or satellite.

Corpus Christi filmmaker Omar Becerra‘s new web series, A Perfect Union, starts with a writer’s investigation into an old murder and warps into a bizarre tale of Freemasons at the Battle of the Alamo.

The San Antonio Current pointed us to this new web series. As the Current’s Scott Andrews wrote:

In Becerra’s story, a freelance writer takes an assignment to chase a cold case murder, and discovers a back story that indicates that the fight for Texan independence wasn’t, after all, a drive to complete Anglo hegemony across the continent but just some infighting between rival Masonic lodges. Hey, any musing about that war that revamps the mythosphere is fine by us.

You can watch all of the episodes, there are five so far, on Koldcast.tv. Koldcast bills itself as “the other TV network”. You can see a new episode every Tuesday. You can check out the trailer for the series below.

Feeling like you are in a pre-Halloween mood and wondering what to do this weekend? Wonder no longer. The reviews are in on the Overtime Theater’s latest show and the critics are loving Dr. “S” Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies: The Movie: The Musical. Showtimes are 8:00 PM Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Sarah Fisch in the San Antonio Current’s review I danced with a zombie notes:

However, the plot’s completely secondary to the musical numbers, which makes me wonder about the short film from which this musical sprang. Still and all, I was gobsmacked by the show’s mightily talented chorus: zombies have mussed 50’s-teen costumes; scientists have labcoats, you get the deal. Both camps achieve chillingly good harmonies and perform sly vaudevillean choreography by Jennifer Baldwin to great effect.

San Antonio Express-News reviewer Michael E. Barrett raves in Overtime’s ‘Dr. S’ makes a successful transition from movie to musical:

Jaime Ramirez’s songs and Jennifer Baldwin’s choreography are consistent comic highlights, their clever lyrics put over with high-stepping absurdity. In fact, the numbers are so good that the show threatens to drag during moments when nobody’s singing.

Barrett is clearly smitten with this production, concluding:

This show started as a project for Robert Rodriguez’s competition for phony grindhouse trailers. Writers Bryan Ortiz, Evan Boston and James Hartz then made it into a feature film directed by Ortiz and produced by Michael Druck. Now that the same crew has turned it into a musical, perhaps the next step will be to film that version.

This show has been selling out fast and you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss it, so call The Overtime Theater at (210) 557-7562 for your tickets now.

Check after the jump for a review of the other shows The Overtime has put on this year…

As promised, an overview of some of the shows produced in the last year at The Overtime, edited by Matt Cassi.

The San Antonio Current has a review of The Overtime Theater’s production of R.U.R. – Rossum’s Universal Robots and reviewer Micah Clare dishes some high praise:

Isaac Asimov himself panned Karel Capek’s 1921 play, R.U.R. – Rossum’s Universal Robots, as “a terribly bad one, but … immortal for that one word.” Maybe he just needed to wait a few decades to see Roy Thomas’s 21st-century adaptation, playing through July 10 at the Overtime Theater.

It sounds like Clare had a good time at the show:

The original “machines rise to overthrow their masters” epic, R.U.R. is credited with introducing the term “robot” to the world’s lexicon and heralding a new era of science fiction. Fans of Metropolis, Blade Runner, and their dystopian ilk will find themselves right at home in Overtime’s tight yet cozy theater. In only an hour and 45 minutes, the viewer gets an engrossing and sometimes chilling escape into the retro-future, realized to satisfaction with props, décor, and lighting right out of an old Flash Gordon serial.

Head over to the Current’s site to read the entire review, “The end of the world as we know it – One of these times, Capek will be right“.

Get ready for what may be the scariest zombie movie yet: The Killing Strain. Directed by Daniel Maldonado and shot entirely in San Antonio, it opens on the big screen Friday, June 18th and Saturday, June 19th at midnight at The Palladium, Mayan and Silverado. These showings will probably sell out so go to this link to buy tickets in advance.

This film looks great, with high quality cinematography…check out the trailer:

About the Film:

Viruses, which need a host because they cannot reproduce on their own, are the original zombie organisms. It takes just one rogue human-engineered virus strain to change our species into something unrecognizable as human.

Imagine, if you will, you and your new wife on a cross-country trip, when a tire blowout stops you in the middle of nowhere. Imagine further your wife doesn’t come back from a short walk through a nearby cornfield. What do you imagine could have taken her away? What is out there, and what can it be that pursues you so mindlessly?

Watch as David, the young husband, does everything he can to stay alive and stay away from the once-human creatures that hunger for David’s beating heart. He takes refuge with an isolated group of uninfected people, and there he gradually finds the inner strength to lead a young woman away from the madness that is The Killing Strain.

If you are interested in the filmmakers and how they created the film, check out the San Antonio Current‘s latest issue for Jeremy Martin’s article Diary of the Dead.

The San Antonio Current sent Steven G. Kellman to a showing of Slasher at Trinity University’s AtticRep and he filed his review last week. The play, by SMU grad Allison Moore is set in Austin, but San Antonio’s staging is the closest it has come to that locale. Kellman clearly enjoyed the performance, a departure from AtticRep’s standard challenging fare of Pinter, Albee and Sheppard. He asks some great questions in his commentary:

Do gory, sadistic, misogynistic movies exploit the women who play their victims? Or do they empower them? “It can’t be exploitation if they’re paying me so much,” reasons Sheena McKinney, a young waitress who, on the strength of her ability to scream, is offered $15,000 to star in a slasher film called Bloodbath. To Marc Hunter, its unscrupulous director, Sheena seems perfect to play “the last girl,” the culminating fatality in a series of atrocities inflicted on attractive women.

Read his full review, The most unkindest cut of all, on the Current’s site and head out to the show. Slasher at the AtticRep runs through May 30th. For more information, contact AtticRep at (210) 999-8524.

Meanwhile, The Current’s Ashley Lindstrom offered up her opinion of The Overtime Theater’s original performance The Life & Death of the Amazing Captain Piledriver. Clearly she had a fun time:

Dru Barkus as the Midnight Fiend, Cynthia Davila as Cobalt Girl, and Rob Barron as Captain Piledriver.

…McDowell has a gift for genre, as evidenced in the Overtime’s recent production of his stage-noir The Hard Bargain, and it’s refreshing to watch a comic-book-inspired narrative that’s actually pretty comical. Clever old-school groaners like “Sorry Barista Girl, didn’t mean to get you steamed” abound and James’s frienemy status makes for a giddily complex dynamic…

The conclusion to her review has us sold:

All are at the top of their game during the show’s slapstick and action sequences, which are engagingly staged by director Lupe Flores and performed with over-the-top vigor and physicality by the actors. Every inch of this critic was pleased to be in a theater where characters burst through walls, attacked in slow motion, and hummed their own theme music.

Definitely worth checking out the Current’s full review Funeral for a super friend. The Life and Death of Captain Piledriver runs through June 5th. For more info call The Overtime Theater at (210) 557-7562.

We made it in as number three in the final tally. Number one was claimed by Ben Olivo who writes the Downtown Blog for the San Antonio Express-News and the Current’s Sarah Fisch scooped the number two spot. Pretty impressive considering that Missions Unknown was a write-in candidate.

The results are in - SA Current's Best Blogger in San Antonio

That clearly means that Missions Unknown makes it to the number one spot in two special subcategories: Blogs not Backed by a Media Juggernaut and Best SF/Fantasy Blog in San Antonio.

We could not have done it without you…thanks for reading and sending in your tips.

Poseidon, the real golden-shower god

You may have heard about the fundamentalists decrying the recent blockbuster film Avatar, now you will have to steel yourself for more of the same with the upcoming release of the remake of Clash of the Titans. At least according to Jeremy Martin over at the San Antonio Current. Martin has an insightful (and hilarious) preview of the religious heresies you can expect to see. Let him explain it:

Don’t be fooled by the movie’s spectacle, fellow believers. Just like the original Clash of the Titans, this movie’s true purpose is to poison the minds of children and other mental feebs with false religion. Below is a believer’s guide to this aberration with the counterpoints to its nonsense helpfully boldfaced and in all caps, so you know they’re right. Scream them at theater-going families this weekend, and let them know the true meaning of Greek Orthodoxy.

You can read the rest of A shower of gold: Release the Kraken on Clash of the Titans’ heresy as Martin hits topics like “Zeus is not a Perv”, “The Riddle of Calibos was Stupid” and “Perseus didn’t Kill Medusa”.

Whether you believe that Harryhausen’s 1981 original is sacrosanct and should have never been remade or you just can’t wait for the CG versions of Medusa and the Kraken in 3D, take a minute to see how the latest incarnation of the Perseus legend will “poison the minds of our children and other mental feebs“.

Afterward, make your reservations for the Worlds Collide meetup for the film: Clash of the Titans 3D at Regal Northwoods. The group is converging on Saturday, April 3rd at 2:00 PM.

In addition, Klaw offered a beginner’s guide to the author’s greatest works, complete with an unfortunate headline (not of his making, he claims) .

If you happen to be scrambling for last-minute holiday gifts for the sf nerd in your life, Anne Dick’s memoir SEARCH FOR PHILIP K. DICK: FOUR NOVELS OF THE 1960′s makes a great stocking stuffer (pictured left).
