What if your life wasn’t everything it seemed? What if that sense of déjà vu was really trying to tell you something more?

The Overtime Theater, San Antonio’s populist production company, presents the part comedy, part sci-fi drama original production Life, Or A Reasonable Approximation Thereof. The play tells the story of an ordinary day for John Ellison, but the day turns out not to be so ordinary. In the course of one morning, John Ellison quits his job, steals a car, and trashes his own kitchen. When his friends and fiancée try to intervene, his explanation is a little on the unexpected side. What’s his excuse? He claims he’s reliving the same day over and over again. But what is really behind John’s strange behavior? Is John reliving the same day, is it all in his head or is there a simpler explanation behind it all? Mysteries are revealed as the tale unfolds.

Life, Or A Reasonable Approximation Thereof was written by Michael D. Burger and directed by Bryan Ortiz. The cast includes Joshua Thomas as John Ellison along with Amanda Ireta, Sophie Bolles, Allen Dearborn and Charles A. Riley. The world premiere of this original SF dramedy is July 8th at 8:00 pm.

Show Dates are July 8 through August 6, 2011. Times are 8 pm Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; and there will be one 3 pm Sunday matinee on July 24. There will be no Friday show on August 5 which is First Friday art party nightin the Overtime’s neighborhood.

Ticket prices are $12 general admission, and $9 for teachers, students, seniors 65+, active military, and SATCO members. The Overtime Theater is located at 1414 S. Alamo, #103. For more information call the Overtime at (210) 557-7562 or check the Overtime’s web site.

Playwright Michael Burger pored himself into the story. “There’s a lot of me on those pages. I think there’s a lot of most people there,” he said. Burger is best known as an accomplished actor in San Antonio community theaters and he also works as a theater teacher at Taft High School.

“I wrote this play because I think most people feel like John at some point in their lives, and at some point, everyone feels like they need something more. One of the reasons I do theater is that I’m afraid of every day being exactly like the day before,” Burger said. “This play lets me explore that fear, while exploring a bit about my favorite aspects of human nature.”

In business since 2007, the Overtime Theater is dedicated to providing innovative and accessible entertainment at an affordable price. The shows are all new, original works or unconventional adaptations of old classics. The Overtime Theater specializes in world premieres of works never before seen on stage!

In just three years, the Overtime has produced over 30 new shows, including four original musicals: Sheer Bloody Lunacy!, Pirates Vs. Ninjas, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die: A New Musical, and Dr. “S” Battles the Sex-Crazed Reefer Zombies: The Movie: The Musical. Other notable productions have included The Good Samaritan, Poet Faustus, Sob! Choke…LOVE!, Action Philosophers, and most recently, the world premieres in 2010-2011 of The Hard Bargain, The Happy Couple, The Last Broadcast of Bailey & Long, Broken Record, All Good Things, and The Decorator. The Overtime Theater also collaborates with local visual artists, giving them a prominent local space in which to display their works in the Blue Star Complex.

The Overtime Theater is now a non-profit organization as determined by the IRS. This decision has been made to extend the Overtime’s mission of “art for the people” to the greater community, including through low-cost workshops in acting, playwriting, comedy improv skills, and art by working professionals.

Since 2006, the Overtime Theater has been dedicated to providing innovative and accessible entertainment at an affordable price. The shows are all new, original works, or unconventional adaptations of old classics. In just three years, the Overtime has produced over 30 new shows.

The Overtime Theater has now moved to non-profit status pending approval by the IRS. This decision has been made to extend the Overtime’s mission of “art for the people” to the greater community, including low-cost workshops in acting, playwriting, comedy improv skills, and art by working professionals.

While the monthly Doctor Who Appreciation Night focuses on the modern revival of the series, there are still hundreds of great episodes in the Doctor Who archives. This month’s Classic Doctor Who meetup features the serial Mawdryn Undead starring Peter Davison as the fifth Doctor.

The Classic Doctor Who meetup takes place at the Overtime Theater (1414 S. Alamo St, San Antonio, TX) on Friday March 18, 2011 at 10:00 PM. Admission is free of charge although the Overtime welcomes donations. The Overtime Theater

Here is a short synopsis of Mawdryn Undead: A warp ellipse draws the TARDIS off course. The Fifth Doctor’s companions are separated from him not in space, but in time, and he has to deal with a treacherous schoolboy named Turlough. But why does the Doctor’s old friend the Brigadier not remember him at all?

This story features several significant characters besides Davison’s quirky Doctor. The Doctor has two companions, Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) who is reaching the end of her time as part of the TARDIS crew, and Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) and Australian airline stewardess. The mysterious Turlough (Mark Strickson) joins up with the crew in this episode and accompanies the Doctor for the next year. This episode also prominantly features Nicolas Courtney as Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. Courtney, who passed away last month at the age of 81, was the longest-serving co-star of the popular science-fiction series, appearing opposite five Doctors.

Looking to stuff yourself on a free pre-Turkey Day serving of Z-grade cinema with a side of snarky comments?

This eventing, Overtime Theater is presenting its monthly free screening of a classic “Mystery Science Theater 3000” episode, and it seems to fit all the above specifications. This month, Mike Nelson and his wisecracking robot companions skewer the awful “Night of the Blood Beast.”

The screening gets underway at 10 p.m., and as usual, it’s hosted by Joey Carrillo.

The movie screening is free, but donations are gladly accepted. Beer, wine and popcorn will be available — and according to Overtime’s website, “B.Y.O.B. is cool.” (Yeah, we think so too.)
