Hitting the big screen is the two-part episode Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead featuring David Tennant in the role of the 10th incarnation of the Doctor.

Showtime is 7:30 PM on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Arrive early for the pre-show activities and to reserve a seat. Dragon’s Lair will be at the Drafthouse selling a loads of Doctor Who merchandise. Last time I was at the Lair I saw the new Lego-like UK Doctor Who Minifigs from Character Builder. Admission is free, but you will need to get a ticket from the box office to secure your spot.

Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes is at 1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas.

In this tale, The Doctor and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) enter an abandoned library, but not just any old library – it’s the greatest in the universe. The one that was sealed off a century before, without any explanation – unless you include the cryptic warning “Count the shadows”. With the shadows on the move again, the Doctor and Donna must uncover the terrible truth behind the Nodes and the Data Ghost to reveal the library’s secret. This is also our first introduction to Professor River Song (Alex Kingston).

Originally broadcast in mid-2008, these episodes were nominated for a Hugo Award.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night is sponsored by Doctor Who Fans Unite.

Tonight’s Classic Doctor Who presentation at the Alamo Drafthouse Stone Oak features one of the timelord’s most memorable adversaries, the Cybermen. “Tomb of the Cybermen” is a classic episode of Doctor Who originally broadcast in 1967 and you can see it for free in the company of some of the best SF fans in San Antonio.

Showtime is Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 7:00 PM. The Alamo Drafthouse Stone Oak is located at 22806 Us Highway 281 North, San Antonio, TX. Admission is free, but you will need to get a ticket from box office to secure your spot.

In “Tomb of the Cybermen” the Doctor (Patrick Troughton, the second incarnation), aided by his two assistants Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling), lands the TARDIS on Telos, the last resting place of the infamous Cybermen. There he discovers a band of archaeologists on a secret expedition to unearth the reason for his old enemies’ extinction. In the underground shadowy depths, they find the icy tomb. A whole army in hibernation…a threat to no one, if the temperature remains low. But if the traitor in their midst gets his way, things could really heat up. This episode was thought to be lost during a late-1970s audit of the BBCs archives, but was rediscovered in the early 1990s.

This event is sponsored by Doctor Who Fans Unite. The group is having a planning meeting on Friday, November 4, 2011, 7:00 PM at La Madelaine (4820 Broadway St , San Antonio, TX). This great fan group is now over 3 years old and continuing to grow and expand and they need your help! Volunteers are needed to server as officers and to help with flyer designs, pre-shows, ad tapes, graphic design, hosting, web design and greeting. If you are interested, come with designs and ideas in hand for this meeting.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night is this Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 at 7:30 pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes (1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX). Admission to this event is free and lots of Who-related fun will be had.

The two episodes being presented are from the sixth season of the new incarnation of the series and were originally broadcast in May 2011. The first part, entitled “The Rebel Flesh”, starts with a solar tsunami sending the TARDIS hurtling towards a futuristic acid-mining factory where doppelgangers – known as ‘Gangers’ – are used to complete jobs deemed too hazardous for humans. When a second wave hits, the Gangers become autonomous look to rebel against their former human masters. Only the Doctor can prevent an escalation of hostilities…but typically, all is not as it seems!

The second installment, “The Almost People”, sees Rory cut off from the Doctor and the rest of the humans while one of the gangers seeks revenge. As the crumbling factory fills with toxic fumes and drips lethal acid, Amy is about to find out if two Doctors really are better than one. And if that isn’t enough, the Doctor, Amy and Rory are rapidly approaching another crisis point. One that may change everything…

These events are fun and well-attended. The sponsoring group, Doctor Who Fans Unite, will have glow-in-the-dark Tardis shirts featuring all eleven Doctors on the back along with limited-edition Tardis pint glasses for sale.

As always admission is free, just stop by the box office to pick up your ticket to secure your spot.

Looking for a SciFi fix to start your weekend right? Head over to the Overtime Theater tonight for a screening of some classic Doctor Who episodes. This event is sponsored by Doctor Who Fans Unite and they are considering showing Tomb of the Cybermen. The group is taking suggestions on their Meetup and Facebook pages, so if you have a specific episode you want to watch, post your comments.

Tomb of the Cybermen was originally broadcast in September, 1967 and features Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor. This storyline set the tone for later appearances of the Cybermen who evolved to be one of the Doctor’s classic foes. Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor in the current run of the series, sites these episodes as the inspiration for his own Doctor Who costume.

This event is at the Overtime Theater (1414 S. Alamo St, San Antonio, TX in the Blue Star arts complex) on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 10:00 PM. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. These shows are always very fun with a lot of audience participation and you are welcome to BYOB. Get to the theater early because the seats may fill up fast!
