Tonight is Doctor Who Appreciation Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlake. By popular demand the the feature is The Wedding of River Song along with the latest Christmas Special, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.

Showtime is Wednesday May 16, 2012 at 7:30 pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes (1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX, 78227, 210.677.8500).

Admission is FREE, but you will need to get a ticket from box office to secure your spot in the theater.

Dragon’s Lair will be back this month with a huge variety of Doctor Who merchandise.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night: Human Nature/Family of Blood

Tonight is Doctor Who Appreciation Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes (1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio). This monthly gathering of the best Doctor Who fans in the city is a fun chance to enjoy your favorite time travel adventures on the big screen with great company. Showtime is Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 7:30 PM. This month’s showing is the two-part story Human Nature and Family of Blood, which was written by Paul Cornell and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form in 2008.

In Human Nature, the Doctor (David Tennant) is laying low in 1913 in the guise of teacher John Smith. Along with his companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), he is trying to avoid the detection of a murderous family of aliens. To make the act complete, the Doctor transfers his TimeLord essence into a watch and forgets that he is not just a normal human. Naturally, the deception doesn’t work entirely and leaves the Doctor with a “Sophie’s Choice”.

The story resumes in Family of Blood. The Great War has arrived a year ahead of time, the school is under attack by aliens and the Doctor is still unaware of his true being! Martha tries to convince the Doctor that the ‘dreams’ he has recorded in his book are real and that it is his current life as a school master that is the fantasy. When the Doctor finally regains his identity, you almost pity the Family of Blood. Almost.

These episodes are dark, romantic and a lot of fun. The sponsoring group, Doctor Who Fans Unite, will have a table full of Doctor Who goodies for sale.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night: “Midnight” & “Turn Left”

Tonight is Doctor Who Appreciation Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes and you can join the best Doctor Who fans in Texas for free screenings of Midnight & Turn Left. Showtime is at 7:30 PM tonight, Wednesday, March 21, 2012. The Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes is at 1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX.

Doctor Who Fans Unite, the group sponsoring this event, asked members to choose the episodes for tonight’s screening. Both episodes were originally broadcast on the BBC in June, 2008 and feature David Tennant as the 10th incarnation of the Doctor and Catherine Tate as his companion Donna Noble.

In Midnight the Doctor attempts to enjoy a well-deserved holiday, taking a bus tour on the deadly-but-beautiful planet Midnight. When the bus stalls and the passengers hear knocking coming from outside the bus things get very tense. Donna Noble only makes a cursory appearance at the beginning and end of the episode.

In Turn Left a brief encounter with a fortune teller reveals what would have happened if Donna had not met the Doctor. How would Earth handle the Racnoss, the falling Titanic or the Sontarans? With the help of the Doctor’s previous companion, Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), Donna attempts to prevent this alternate time line from happening. This episode is lite on the Doctor, with most of the action centering around Donna Noble.

Doctor Who Appreciation Tonight at Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes

Tonight is Doctor Who Appreciation Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes featuring two episodes starring David Tennant as the 10th incarnation of the problem-solving Time Lord. The episodes on tap are The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, originally broadcast in 2006.

Showtime is Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 7:30 PM at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes (1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX). This event is sponsoered by Doctor Who Fans Unite and, as always, admission is free but you will need a ticket from the Box Office to secure your spot in theater.

In this two-parter the Doctor’s TARDIS lands in Sanctuary Base 6, a deep-space mining and exploration facility. The Doctor (David Tennant) and Rose (Billie Piper) discover undecipherable alien writing and run into the very creepy aliens called The Ood who turn out to be servants of the space station’s crew. Said crew is engaged in exploring the mysterious planet Krop Tor which appears to be stably in place on the precipice of a black hole. There is a large inexplicable energy source buried on the planet and as the explorers drill closer the Ood transmit ominous messages from an awakening enity known at The Beast.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night Visits the Library Tonight

Tonight is Doctor Who Appreciation Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes and get ready for a great one. Hitting the big screen is the two-part episode Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead featuring David Tennant in the role of the 10th incarnation of the Doctor.

Showtime is 7:30 PM on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Arrive early for the pre-show activities and to reserve a seat. Dragon’s Lair will be at the Drafthouse selling a loads of Doctor Who merchandise. Last time I was at the Lair I saw the new Lego-like UK Doctor Who Minifigs from Character Builder. Admission is free, but you will need to get a ticket from the box office to secure your spot.

In this tale, The Doctor and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) enter an abandoned library, but not just any old library – it’s the greatest in the universe. The one that was sealed off a century before, without any explanation – unless you include the cryptic warning “Count the shadows”. With the shadows on the move again, the Doctor and Donna must uncover the terrible truth behind the Nodes and the Data Ghost to reveal the library’s secret. This is also our first introduction to Professor River Song (Alex Kingston).

Originally broadcast in mid-2008, these episodes were nominated for a Hugo Award.

Classic Doctor Who Presents ‘The Deadly Assassin’

Doctor Who Fans Unite is bringing you another free screening of a classic Doctor Who tale tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse in Stone Oak. This month’s installment features Tom Baker as the scarf bedecked fourth Doctor in the episode The Deadly Assassin.

The show is Wednesday December 7th, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Alamo Drafthouse Stone Oak (22806 Us Highway 281 North, San Antonio, TX) (map). Admission is free, but you will need a ticket from box office to secure your seat in theater.

In this four=parter from 1976 the Doctor (Tom Baker) answers a summons and finally returns to his homeworld, Gallifrey, seat of the Time Lords. However, when the President of the High Council is assassinated, he becomes the prime suspect, while an old enemy lurks in the shadows, pulling the strings. This story features the Doctor without a companion since Sarah Jane Smith left in the previous episode and Leela is introduced int he next one. When The Deadly Assassin was originally broadcast, television decency campaigners criticized some frightening scenes, particularly the cliffhanger at the end of the third episode.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night has a ‘God Complex’ Tonight!

Tonight is Doctor Who Appreciation Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes and our favorite Timelord hits the big screen in two great episodes featuring Matt Smith in the role of the Doctor.

First up is The God Complex, a delightfully weird and creepy episode that see the Tardis crew trapped in a weird hotel where vistors are hunted down by a mysterious god-like being. The second episode is Closing Time which sees the return of Craig and Sophie and the Doctor working in a shop while trying to track down an invasion of Cybermen. Both of these episodes were originally broadcast in 2011.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night is Wednesday November 16th and showtime is at 7:30 PM. Get there a little early for the pre-show festivities. Tonight’s Classic Doctor Who presentation at the Alamo Drafthouse Stone Oak features one of the timelord’s most memorable adversaries, the Cybermen. “Tomb of the Cybermen” is a classic episode of Doctor Who originally broadcast in 1967 and you can see it for free in the company of some of the best SF fans in San Antonio.

In “Tomb of the Cybermen” the Doctor (Patrick Troughton, the second incarnation), aided by his two assistants Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling), lands the TARDIS on Telos, the last resting place of the infamous Cybermen. There he discovers a band of archaeologists on a secret expedition to unearth the reason for his old enemies’ extinction. In the underground shadowy depths, they find the icy tomb. A whole army in hibernation…a threat to no one, if the temperature remains low. But if the traitor in their midst gets his way, things could really heat up. This episode was thought to be lost during a late-1970s audit of the BBCs archives, but was rediscovered in the early 1990s.

Doctor Who - 'The Mind Robber'

The new Doctor Who series has drawn many new fans to the show who don’t realize that the Doctor’s adventures on the BBC began in 1961. Besides their monthly Doctor Who Appreciation Night, Doctor Who Fans Unite is endeavoring to bring you up to speed on some of the rich history of our favorite Time Lord.

This month’s Classic Doctor Who showing brings you the second Doctor larger than life on the big screen at the Alamo Drafthouse Stone Oak (22806 Us Highway 281 North, San Antonio) in the 5-episode storyline The Mind Robber. Showtime is 7:00 PM on Wednesday October 5th, 2011.

This story finds the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions Jaime (Frazer Hines) and Zoe (Wendy Padbury) doing an emergency escape to “the void”, and area outside of time and space. The end up in a land of pure fantasy where they encounter a unicorn, life-size toy soldiers, Gulliver, a minotaur, Medusa and Rapunzel.

Doctor Who Appreciation Night Goes to War!

Wednesday night is time for the monthly meetup of San Antonio’s most committed Doctor Who fans in the form of Doctor Who Appreciation Night. This week’s screening will be the mid-season finale A Good Man Goes to War followed by the episode Let’s Kill Hitler. Show time is 7:30 PM on Wednesday September 21, 2011 at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes (1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX).

Doctor Who Apprecitation Night is sponsored by Doctor Who Fans Unite. The group will have Doctor-related activities and TARDIS pint glasses and glow-in-the-dark TARDIS t-shirts for sale. Admission is free, but you need to get a ticket from the box office to secure your seat.

In A Good Man Goes to War, The Doctor and Rory race through the galaxy to find Amy Pond. Much is revealed in this episode and you may need a tissue for the final scenes. The evening concludes on a lighter note with Let’s Kill Hitler, in which the TARDIS crew travels back in time with Amy and Rory’s childhood friend Mels. They meet Hitler and end up on a wild chase with a justice robot.

Head out to the Drafthouse Wednesday night for a great time with great fans.
