Austin Rogers of Redbeard Comics

On January 22nd, First Storm Manga is holding their first Mezasu Mini-Con at C4 Workspace. This is not your typical anime convention, but aimed at people who are interested in creating comics and supporting original art from local comics and manga artists. We made it our mission to find out more about Mezasu Mini-Con, so we dialed up First Storm’s Austin “Redbeard” Rogers looking for answers. Here are the straight facts, directly from the bearded one.

Missions Unknown: What is the Mezasu Mini-Con?

Austin Rogers: Mezasu Mini Con is a new event that First Storm Manga has put together in order to create opportunities for original artists and writers, mostly in the form of manga and comics. We have a no “fan art” policy, so the public gets to experience only original art at the event. Creators can promote their art and stories without having to compete with the mainstreams of their genre.

MU: What kind of exhibits or activities can attendees expect? Who should attend?

AR: Every hour will be filled with workshops and panels that deal with everything from how to draw chibis to character development.

First Storm Manga presents Mezasu mini-con!

Three raffles will held throughout with various prizes. Also, most artists will be available for commissions as well.

All attendees will find something to enjoy, but those who are aspiring artists and writers, or just enjoy local art, will benefit the most.

MU: How many creators are you expecting?

AR: We will have nine creators in all, each with their own style and experiences to share.

MU: Tell us about the workshops you have scheduled and the presenters; which one are you looking forward to?

AR: A few of the workshops we have include “Organizing Your Story: Outlining & Scripting” by Ket Naki (head organizer for First Storm Manga), and “Introduction to Brush Inking Your Comics/Art” by Amanda Coronado. Amanda’s a local San Antonio artist whom I’m really looking forward to her workshop because I’m about to make the switch to brush inking with my own comics.

MU: The con is at C4 Workspace, that cool co-working place in Southtown, a seemingly unusual venue for this sort of event. How did you get hooked up with C4?

AR: In the early days of planning the event, I came to C4 for an unrelated meet-up and I had a good feeling about the place. I was able to visualize the convention there and the staff has been very accommodating.

MU: Explain briefly to our readers who may be unfamiliar, what is First Storm Manga? How many people are involved?

AR: At its core, FSM currently consists of four artists and writers that are working to create opportunities for aspiring creators in the manga/storytelling genre. We do everything from holding free workshops at local libraries to we create free compilation books with local artists. Find out more at www.firststormmanga.com.

MU: OK, my Japanese isn’t that good, what’s ‘Mezasu’?

AR: The word Mezasu is Japanese for “to aim at” or “to aim for” which is the heart of what the convention is all about. Also, the symbols mean creativity.

MU: How’s the San Antonio manga scene? What’s the latest locally-grown creation we need to check out?

AR: With more and more events being held in the manga genre, I think it’s doing pretty good. As far what’s locally grown, you’ll have to come to the con to find out!

Well, here it is summer and science fiction and fantasy conventions are in full swing. I just attended ApolloCon last weekend in Houston with writer Guest of Honor (GOH) Catherine Asaro. I was on four panels ranging from the e-Book revolution, Frankenstein films of the last 100 years, the DC Comics 75th anniversary, and more. I saw people like A. Lee Martinez, Bill Crider, Lawrence Person, Katherine Eliska Kimbriel, Mel White, Rhonda Eudaly and Julia Mandalla (two of the Four Redheads of the Apocalypse), Lawrence Person, Stina Leicht, steampunker O. M. Grey who looked fabulous in her outfit, and many others.

There are several more conventions coming up on us and they feature a plethora of amazing guests. I plan to attend all the Texas conventions.

At the end of this week, July 9 – 12, there is Mythcon 41 in Dallas, which is a primarily academic convention which concentrates on various myths as well as the work of the Inklings (J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Charles Williams). This is sponsored by The Mythopoeic Society. Guest of Honor include (author) Tim Powers and (scholar) Janet Brennan Croft. Other guest will include A. Lee Martinez, Shanna Swendson, Will Clarke, Suzanne Frank, Lou Antonelli, and me

Following that is ArmadilloCon 32 in Austin. Guests this year include Rachel Caine (Author GOH), Cat Conrad (Artist GOH), Anne Sowards (Editor GOH), Elspeth Bloodgood (Fan GHO), Nancy Kress (Toastmaster), Ilona Andrews (Urban Fantasy Special Guest, and Michael Bishop (Steampunk Special Guest). One of the most fun conventions around with a heavy guest list of Texas writers and artists. I have never missed one and I don’t plan to start now.

Fencon VII is in Dallas September 17 – 19. This year’s Writer Guest is Spider Robinson and the late Jeanne Robinson . Music Guests of Honor: Jeff & Maya Bohnhoff, Fen Guests of Honor: Kevin Roche & Andrew Trembley, Artist Guest of Honor: John Picacio, Science Guest of Honor: John Randall, Toastmaster: Joe R. Lansdale, Special Guest: Jessica Wade, and Special Guest: Robert J. Sawyer. Again many writers and artists from Texas and Oklahoma and surrounding areas will be present.

Other not quite so near conventions include the North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFIC) which is held whenever the World Science Fiction Convention is not in the US. This year it will be held in Raleigh, NC. The NASFIC will be held August 5 – 8. Guests of Honor include Eric Flink (Writer), former San Antonian Brad Foster (Artist), Juanita Coulson (Fan), and Toni Weisskopf (Toastmaster). There should be many writers and editors there who decided not to trek to Australia.

The World Science Fiction Convention will be held this year September 2 – 6 in Melbourne, Australia (go to www.aussiecon4.org.au for details). Guests of Honor include Kim Stanley Robinson, Shaun Tan, and Robin Johnson. The WorldCon is always a fun way to spend your days and this year if you can make it into a nice long vacation, swing by New Zealand and see those Lord of the rings sites. Lots of writers and editors generally attend, though fewer go when it is a non-US WorldCom.

For the mystery fan, there is BoucherCon. This year it is BoucherCon by the Bay and it is in San Francisco October 14 – 17. Guests include Lee Child, Denise Mina, Laurie M. King, Eddie Muller, and Maddy Van Hertbruggen. Bouchercons are a tremendous amount of fun if you are a mystery fan with programming for virtually every style and a large number of accessible guests and editors.

The World Fantasy Convention is one of my favorite conventions with a heavy writer to fan ratio. This year’s show is in Columbus, OH October 28 – 30. This year’s Guests include Dennis McKiernan, Esther Friesner, David Hartwell, and Darrell K. Sweet.

And that does not include the comic related things like San Diego’s ComicCon (July 22 – 25) where roughly 150,000 people mingle and mix. My nephews will be there this year. I should have gone when I had the chance in the past. Not likely now that the crowd has reached these sizes. Or Dragon*Con (September 3 – 6) in Atlanta which has huge crowds also. Their guest lineup is magnificent with some big name writers, stars, and artists. Check them out.

This annual staple of the south Texas gaming scene runs April 9-11, 2010 at the beautiful San Pedro Village Event Center. This year’s con features a space odyssey theme and is raising money for the Challenger Learning Center of San Antonio with the intriguing concept of “Cheat for a Cause”.

Missions Unknown wanted to know the inside scoop behind the con so we put the questions to Chimaeracon’s Publicist Gilder Anne McCarroll.

Missions Unknown: How long has Chimaeracon been around, give us a little history of the event?

Gilder McCarroll: Chimaeracon was founded in 2002 by April Bremner as an event “by gamers for gamers”. It has slowly expanded over the past nine years to include overlapping fandoms (sci-fi, fantasy, anime, horror, etc) and hobbies (game design, costuming, medieval re-enactment).

Missions Unknown: Who runs Chimaeracon?

Gilder McCarroll: Chimaeracon is planned, organized, and operated by San Antonio-area fan volunteers. They devote their energies and countless hours to the con 12 months a year.

Missions Unknown: What is the origin of the name?

Gilder McCarroll: April chose “chimaera” because the mythical creature, combining traits of a lion, a goat, and a snake or dragon, is frequently used by game designers. To me, it represents the diversity of sci-fi, fantasy, and other literary/media/arts genres.

Gilder McCarroll: Demos, friendly games, and tournaments in various game types: card-collectible (CCG), board, role-playing (RPG), live-action role-playing (LARP) and electronic (PC and console). For details, please see our extensive event list.

Medieval costumes and boffer combat demos by Amtgard, panels on cosplay, a Saturday evening costume/cosplay contest presented by Mizuumi-Con, the Valve online gaming community, and the “steampunk” media genre.

Missions Unknown: I know some of the folks at Missions Unknown have been guests in previous years, who are your guests this year?

Gilder McCarroll: We’re hosting four San Antonio-based guests this year, author Scott A. Cupp and artist Victor Gabriel Burgos. Our Space Odyssey theme guests are local representatives from the Challenger Learning Center of San Antonio and Teachers in Space.

Missions Unknown: Who is the target audience for the con? Is it primarily aimed at gamers?

Gilder McCarroll: Yes, but we welcome fans of all the fantastic genres: sci-fi, fantasy, anime, horror, etc. For example, I’m not a gamer; my interests are in literary and media sci-fi. We try to include a little bit of everything, as you’ll see from the event schedule.

Missions Unknown: What’s the newest, hottest thing that folks can see for the first time at Chimaeracon?

Gilder McCarroll: I’m surprised every year! We receive samples of new products from many game manufacturers, thanks to the efforts of our industry coordinator, Al Griego. Al’s also an SJ Games MIB (demonstrator).

This past weekend I took the family out to Our Lady of the Lake University on the shore of Lake Elmendorf in San Antonio’s near west side to enjoy the sites, sounds and people of Mizuumi-Con 3. Put on by OLLU’s Mizuumi Anime Club, the con drew a large active crowd of anime, manga and video game fans. The turnout was great, with a registration line well out of the building and a steady stream of new attendees throughout the day. Many, many people were decked out in costume which lent a fun, frivolous air to the event.

The opening ceremonies, while sincere, were underwhelming. The best part was the the introduction of the guests, mainly the utterly charming artist Valerie Lynn Aguilar, winner of the badge art contest. Aguilar, a student at St. Phillip’s College, explained how this was the first time she had won something like this, that she loved seeing her art on all the badges and that she was floored that people could “buy my chibis on a thong!”

We enjoyed screenings of several anime features including new favorite S.O.S. Brigade. Carey Martell‘s documentary Cosplayers: The Movie was an interesting look at the cosplay subculture, capturing some of the energy of the people involved. I felt that the film lost some focus at the end, degenerating into more of an explanation of the woes of the anime industry, but overall it was a good, insightful piece. Otaku Hell with Spike and Maria was a rollicking fun time hosted by a candy-throwing naughty nurse and video-playing ninja. The show alternated between choice web and anime video clips and goofy contests. The dealers room was well stocked with artists, toys, manga and anime. Plenty of things to look at and buy. I even ran into my old friend Grego Hernandez, proprietor of Bean Pot Toiz.

Other festivities included a Japanese flute recital, Japanese egg making demonstrations, origami lessons, a Twitter-based scavenger hunt, karaoke and a steady stream of J-POP videos with only a mild Rickroll interruption. You can catch some video reports of the con from guests, including Kyle Hebert on the impressive Mizuumi Con line and Random on Contra Dancing.

Even through we did not stick around for the later events including cosplay skits and musical performances, this was a fun con and the Mizuumi Anime Club did a great job pulling it off. This was the third year of the con and organizer Darrell Hoberer noted that they combined the best of what worked in the previous two years for this event. I look forward to seeing what they distill from this one next year’s con.

Hey, San Antonio sf/f fans — how many of you have been begging for a great science fiction/fantasy convention to happen here in SA? Well, if you haven’t heard, San Antonio will be one of the bid sites for the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention. The people who will be running that bid are in Austin this weekend at SMOFcon. What is SMOFcon? See here for details, but in a nutshell, it’s not a normal, open-to-the-public con as much as insiders’ workshop on how to run a great convention. Legendary conrunners from around the world attend and exchange notes on how to do a great con and learn from each other how to do it better next time. If you want to ensure that SA gets the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, then you might consider attending and finding out more. SMOFcon happens this weekend. So if you’ve ever wanted this to happen, now’s your chance to meet the people who will run it, join their team, and be a part of bringing a great con to our city.

Remember that FIELD OF DREAMS line “Build it and they will come”? Pat and Jeannie Wilshire have done just that — built the best annual sf/fantasy art event of the year in their hometown of tiny Altoona, PA, and lo, the artists came. IlluxCon 2 happened this past weekend, and it was a blast. It’s a gathering of some of the best sf/fantasy artists in the world for a four-day weekend, exhibiting their art and hanging out with hardcore collectors, art directors, and sf/fantasy art afficionados — and unlike most sf/fantasy cons, this one’s all about celebrating the visual arts.

I was honored to be amongst the select list of invited artists who exhibited their work and talked shop — and it was definitely a diverse all-star list including Michael Whelan, Dave Seeley, Vincent Villafranca, Bob Eggleton, Eric Fortune, Bruce Jensen, Daren Bader, Donato Giancola, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, John Jude Palencar, Brom, Jordu Schell, Justin Gerard, Justin Sweet, Lucas Graciano, Michael Hayes, and many more. Pyr’s Lou Anders and Wizards of the Coast’s Jon Schindehette were amongst the art directors present to review student portfolios.

Like most art shows, the exhibition and selling of original art and merchandise is a big focus of the show, but what I liked about this one was the energy and camaraderie. The programming was terrific and art-centric ranging from demos to virtual studio discussions to art director q&a’s. IlluxCon was a first-class affair. Pat and Jeannie organized this from scratch. They’re passionate about sf/fantasy art and they’ve got a progressive can-do spirit. I think that makes all the difference in the world. They’ve presented a stellar case study for how to run a first-class art show, how to properly market a first-class art show, and they did it without the infrastructure and resources of larger sf/fantasy conventions.

It was an unforgettable trip, and I’m strongly considering returning for next year’s show. Here’s a Flickr set of iPhone shots to give you a taste of the action.

Well, your golden opportunity is coming this December. Currently, San Antonio is a top bid contender for the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention. For anyone who ever dreamed of running a convention like this, SMOFcon 27 in Austin might be the answer to your dreams. This year’s SMOFcon is December 4-6 at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Austin. The hotel is located on 5th St., right near all of the clubs and music scene of Austin’s famous 6th St. Registrations and hotel reservations are now being accepted.

SMOFcon is a tiny weekend conference of world-class sf/fantasy con organizers from around the globe who share their knowledge and know-how about how to run a first-class convention. Most of these experts are fans themselves, but they’re so knowledgeable about the behind-the-scenes running of sf/fantasy cons (such as the World Science Fiction Convention) that they’re called “SMOFs”, which stands for Secret Masters of Fandom.

SMOFcon happens once a year, and happens in a different international city every time. Because this year it’s in Austin, this is a huge opportunity for all San Antonio science fiction fans who want to help with the 2013 Worldcon bid effort, or are simply interested in bettering their skills at managing conventions, group meetings, and social events. This is not a con for the casual fan, but a con for fans who want to run conventions. It’s rare that SMOFcon occurs this close to San Antonio, so for the latter, this is an event not to be missed.
