Hidden Track Films snagged the top honors in the 2011 San Antonio 48-Hour Film Project with the short Sci-Fi thriller The Extraction. This tense little film not only won the Best Film Award but also swept up awards for Best Costume, Best Sound Design, Best Directing, Best Editing and an Audience Award. The Extraction was directed and produced by Kimberly Scott and Chris Pichado and was shot using 2 Canon 5D mkII cameras. Congratulations to all involved. Check out the film as it was submitted for the contest.

The Extraction (Original Cut) from Hidden Track Films on Vimeo.

The Extraction now moves on to the national level of the The 48-Hour Film Project where it will be representing San Antonio at Filmapalooza in the Taos Shortz Film Fest (March 2-4, 2012). Winners representing 102 cities from around the world are competing for for the title of 48HFP International Best film, the international trophy, $3,000 and a screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Naturally we will bring you more films as they are shared online. Check after the jump for The Ultimatum and Black Box.

The Ultimatum, a dark comedy from Achromat Productions, won the award for Best Use of Prop, a wrapped present.

Black Box did not claim any awards, but was fun nonetheless.

The San Antonio leg of the 48-Hour film project was sponsored by the San Antonio Film Commission. Film crews have a mere 48 hours of the course of a weekend to create a short film in a randomly selected genre using the following elements: a character named Ross or Rose Gillen who is an Upholsterer/Furniture Maker, a wrapped present as a prop and the line of dialogue “I wouldn’t count on it.”

The San Antonio 48 Hour Film Experience put on by the San Antonio Film Commission is history, but there are still a couple of pieces of business remaining. First, the awards, which were handed out last night at the Film Commission’s annual holiday party.

First place and the Audience Award went to Team Uncle Dynamite with their film La Vida De Noche, Second went to Team Live Wire for Endgame and third place was claimed by Team Cine Veliz. Team Uncle Dynamite was lead by Pete Barnstrom and featured the copious talents of Wes Barlow, Nikki Young, Brant Bumpers, Justin Barlow, Becky Jacobs, Karina Barlow, José Salinas, Lee Hurtado, Joey Carrillo, Paul Vaughn, David Stinemetze, Jeanie Portis, Miranda Contreras, Dan Smith and David Garza. Congratulations to all!

Second, we’re still trying to bring you as many of the entries as possible. This one, entitled Wild Sunday, presents a tale of the violent clash of generations. Directed by Rod Guajardo and featuring Anthony Guajardo (recently seen in AMC’s The Walking Dead). Rod has a nice blog post outlining the project and showing production stills.

Teams of filmmakers across San Antonio worked furiously over the weekend making short films in a short amount of time as part of the San Antonio 48 Hour Film Experience. While the national competition was in August, this local version is sponsored by the San Antonio Film Commission. The screening for the films is 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 7th at the Bijou Theater.

The way the competition works is that teams receive a random genre, character, line of dialog and location that must be included in some way in the film. As soon as films are posted online, we will bring them to you. Until then, here are a few of the films from past events that you may enjoy.

Dénouement, Directed by Alejandro DeHoyos, won the San Antonio portion of the national 48 Hour Film Competition in 2009. The short follows an actor who can’t seem to tell where the filming ends and reality begins.

We have more films…after the jump.

Finishing School, directed by Phillip James, was the entry in the 2010 national competition from Team In Focus. It presents an inside look at a school for assassins.

Saint Passions Landing, from Team Live Wire, was written and directed by Mark Cantu. It was the winner of 2009′s 48 Hour Film Experience. This short takes a liberal and fantastic turn on the soap opera genre.

Lastly, a favorite on mine since I helped out with this one, Voodoo Daddy from Team Barnstrom was conceived and directed by Pete Barnstrom.

Vibratory Tumbler Films drew the superhero genre. You will notice the nice establishing shot of one of our favorite funny book emporiums, Atomic Comics at the beginning of the short. Reflection was directed by Albert Wooten and explores what it takes to become an actual hero…with a surprising twist.

OK, you’ve really gotta see this short gem from San Antonio’s film scene. Let the movie’s title graphic speak for itself: The year is 3068. Earth’s only known inhabitants are females scattered & surviving on the outskirts of ruins that were once San Antonio.

San Antonio in ruins, feral women, duct taped clones…what’s not to like?

No Man’s Land was created for the 2007 San Antonio 48 Hour Film Project by Team Project Mayhem led by Brent Graham of MonkeyBot Films. The film won Best Cinematography and tied for Best Costumes. As Graham notes on his site, “it’s hard to lose those two categories when you have hot girls running around a jungle.”

Is it safe for work? Probably, but your employer will be quite disappointed when he finds you watching it on his dime.
