Artist John Picacio wins the Hugo Award… finally

John Picacio's tweeted picture of his recently won Hugo and Chesley.

After eight consecutive Hugo Award nominations, one of Missions Unknown’s editors — artist John Picacio — has finally landed one of the coveted rocket-shaped trophies.

John had a runaway 2011, illustrating the “A Song of Ice and Fire” 2012 Calendar, based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels and their popular HBO “Game of Thrones” adaptation. He also did covers for Ian McDonald’s Planesrunner, Robert Silverberg’s Times Three and Admiralty: The Collected Short Works of Poul Anderson, Vol. 4.

While John’s been quiet about the big win on his blog, he has shared his excitement in a few brief tweets. Among them, “OMG. I just won a Hugo. #dreamcometrue.” Sounds about right.

Further sweetening the pot, John also grabbed a Chesley Award for Best Product Illustration for the “Song of Ice and Fire” calendar over same weekend. It was his fourth Chesley win.

He received both recognitions at Chicago’s Chicon 7, the 70th World Science Fiction Convention. Of course, the 71st, LoneStarCon 3, will take place in John’s — and our — hometown of San Antonio.
