On July 24th at Pat O’Brian’s in San Antonio was the Alamo City Gaming Championship. Our friend Chris Holm attended and filed this report:
The Alamo City Gaming Championship was organized to help to promote the gaming scene in Texas. Several gamers attended to test their skills against the best in Texas in such titles as Super Street Fighter 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Guitar Hero. The largest turnout was for Super Street Fighter 4 having 68 competitors fighting for the top. Several consoles were set up for competition. Gaming organizations were represented including Extra Life, a charity event where gamers play for a sponsored 24 hours to raise money for children’s cancer research. Elite Gaming of San Antonio was on hand, they are a local PC/console mod shop and provided customized Xboxes as prizes. Also folks from Monster’s Arcade were out to help.
I was asked to lend a hand as well. My friend’s at Original-Gamer.com asked that I bring in my Xbox and copy of Super Street fighter 4. I had just purchased it so it was pretty cool to know my copy would be played by some of the best in Texas. The atmosphere was very open, everyone there was cheerful and excited about all the competitive gaming going on. The venue was big enough that everyone had room to walk around. The only places where crowds were packed were around the consoles during matches. One of the organizers had asked if some artists could be on hand with video game related artwork. I set up a table and drew Street Fighter art for display and had a few commissions from players of their favorite fighters. I had a blast at this event and I hope for more to put Texas on the map of the competitive gaming scene.
