SMOFcon Comes To TexasSMOFcon Comes To Texas

Hey, San Antonio sf/f fans — how many of you have been begging for a great science fiction/fantasy convention to happen here in SA? Well, if you haven’t heard, San Antonio will be one of the bid sites for the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention. The people who will be running that bid are in Austin this weekend at SMOFcon. What is SMOFcon? See here for details, but in a nutshell, it’s not a normal, open-to-the-public con as much as insiders’ workshop on how to run a great convention. Legendary conrunners from around the world attend and exchange notes on how to do a great con and learn from each other how to do it better next time. If you want to ensure that SA gets the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, then you might consider attending and finding out more. SMOFcon happens this weekend. So if you’ve ever wanted this to happen, now’s your chance to meet the people who will run it, join their team, and be a part of bringing a great con to our city.

I attended SMOFCon this weekend and had a great time. I met many major fans I had not met before, ran into MU’s John Picacio, and saw SA’s Stewart Smith schmoozing around learning about various convention things. It was small, informative, and had many great things to do. California hosts next year’s.

  • Good to see you too, Scott, however briefly. I came to do the panel and had to hit the road immediately thereafter. It was a quick con visit, but a good one.

  • Thanks for making the trip for the panel. Your presence made for quite a lively discussion.

I’ve seen a post that indicated the payment issue made it on to a subsequent panel as well. The issue appears to be getting some air time.

  • I wish I had known about this eariler as I have a friend interested in this kind of thing. Another friend of mine, someone with San Japan, did attend the event. He told me at one of the panel, it became a little heated between sci-fi folk (old school) and the anime folk (new school?). At times the debate evolved into “Us vs. Them.” Although, I wasn’t there first hand, I can understand how such a debate can erupt in these difficult times. One thing you can never get away from though is “Con-Drama!” Anyways, This is definitely something to look into in the future.
