San Antonio filmmakers took part in the 2009 SA48HR Film Experience over the weekend and you can see the results tonight at the Santikos Bijou theater. The showing is at 7:00, December 8th.
The SA48HR started on Friday with a Kick-Off event at the El Tropicano Hotel where all teams drew for the film variables, and then embarked on their weekend film experience. To help make sure all the teams have a fair shot, variables are handed out including a genre, a character, a location and a line of dialog. Movies must be 8 minutes or less and had to be turned in by 7:30 on Sunday.
As always, Missions Unknown will highlight any of the films with a SF/F/H angle. This time, I have a new insight into the 48 hour filmmaking having helped out on one of the teams. Our team, led by Mistah Pete Barnstrom, produced a short called Voodoo Daddy, a little tale of a child’s revenge on his overbearing father.
Our team consisted of Mistah Pete (writer/director/actor), Paul Vaughn (fake web site and title graphics), Erik Bosse (cinematography), Carlos Piña (actor), Tamedra Jones Vasquez (actor), Cooper Barnstrom (actor) and Rocky Piña (stuntperson). We drew the Film Noir genre and had to include the character of Arielle, an artiste, and mention the location Hill Country and include the line of dialog “Hey, I shave my legs with that!”
Come out to the Bijou tonight and show your support for local filmmakers. Mistah Pete and I will both be there, we hope to see you.

Stuntperson. Heh.
Oh I can’t wait to see your short. Our team did not enter this time around.
Standing room only at the screening. The Bijou had to bring in extra chairs and the doors were closed to further patrons. And this was after they switched to a larger theater! Fun films.
Gilberto: To call it “my short” would be a gross overstatement. It was Mistah Pete’s film and it was pretty funny. The crowd was laughing non-stop throughout. I contributed the fake web site and title graphic.
I was very impressed with the quality of the movies. For 48 hours, many of them were excellent. More than a few were very good no matter the amount of time they had.
Hope you were there, Gilberto.
