Well, your golden opportunity is coming this December. Currently, San Antonio is a top bid contender for the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention. For anyone who ever dreamed of running a convention like this, SMOFcon 27 in Austin might be the answer to your dreams. This year’s SMOFcon is December 4-6 at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Austin. The hotel is located on 5th St., right near all of the clubs and music scene of Austin’s famous 6th St. Registrations and hotel reservations are now being accepted.
SMOFcon is a tiny weekend conference of world-class sf/fantasy con organizers from around the globe who share their knowledge and know-how about how to run a first-class convention. Most of these experts are fans themselves, but they’re so knowledgeable about the behind-the-scenes running of sf/fantasy cons (such as the World Science Fiction Convention) that they’re called “SMOFs”, which stands for Secret Masters of Fandom.
SMOFcon happens once a year, and happens in a different international city every time. Because this year it’s in Austin, this is a huge opportunity for all San Antonio science fiction fans who want to help with the 2013 Worldcon bid effort, or are simply interested in bettering their skills at managing conventions, group meetings, and social events. This is not a con for the casual fan, but a con for fans who want to run conventions. It’s rare that SMOFcon occurs this close to San Antonio, so for the latter, this is an event not to be missed.
