San Antonio gets what's coming to it in War Day.

This is the 2nd episode in my series on sf, fantasy and horror with San Antonio ties.

In 1984, sometimes-San Antonian WHITLEY STREIBER and his friend JAMES KUNETKA wiped San Antonio off the map. And they sold a lot of books doing it.

It was the height of the Cold War, Cowboy Ronnie was in the White House and the U.S. and Soviet Union were sitting on enough nuclear munitions to erase the population of the planet several times over. In other words, just the right environment for Streiber and Kunetka to introduce WAR DAY, a post-apocalyptic novel that became a New York Times bestseller.

The book details the horrific dangers that would follow even a limited nuclear exchange. The only big U.S. cities directly hit in the 30-minute war are San Antonio, Washington DC and the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs of New York City. Yet the death toll rises by the millions as the subsequent firestorms, radiation sickness and epidemics decimate the surviving population.

The book racked up hefty sales, even yielding a feature story on its authors in People Magazine. Before Streiber went on to write his UFO-abduction book COMMUNION, he collaborated with Kunetka again on NATURE’S END, a novel of environmental apocalypse.
